VIDEO: Watch Over 50 Cars Involved In Massive Pileup In Iowa As Snowstorm Rips Through State

Over 50 cars were involved in a massive pileup in Iowa as a snowstorm ripped through the state on Tuesday.

The pileup occurred around 11 a.m. Tuesday morning on the westbound side of Interstate 80, outside of Altoona, Iowa. It happened as drivers contended with reportedly white-out conditions due to a fast-moving snowstorm that hit the area.

“I think the fact that conditions changed so rapidly likely contributed as well,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Randy Adkins said. “This is the type of thing that will easily catch someone off guard.”

Several semitrailers collided with each other, spinning out and ripping into the trailers as they attempted to slow down. More cars continued barreling into the trailers as drivers attempted to slow down, hitting the trailers and other vehicles the pileup grew.

Early parts of the pileup were caught on video by witnesses and quickly made their way online.

“Weren't going that fast, but when you hit the brakes, you totally slid on the ice,” witness Kristi Meyer told Des Moines CBS affiliate KCCI. Meyer was also one of the few to avoid getting caught up in the pileup as it occurred.

“There was a guy that was in front of me that had been hurt,” Meyer continued. “So, I was hoping that he was OK and feeling very fortunate that I was in a pocket between some semis that I didn't get hurt.”

Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Alex Dinkla said no fatalities had been reported and only one person was seriously injured in the crash.

“That's a testament to the way some these vehicles are built, but ultimately that driver did have their seat belt on and could have saved his life today,” Dinkla said.
