Wayne Rooney capped a Manchester United fastbreak with a stellar left-footed strike in the 23rd minute of their Capital One Cup third-round match with Ipswich on Wednesday at Old Trafford.

The English striker raced to the top of United’s attack and fought off defender Piotr Malarczyk for a well-placed through ball and slipped to the left side of the net to slide his shot past keeper Bartosz Bialkowski for the 1-0 lead.

Coming off an excellent run with his compatriots in international play, Rooney’s now tallied seven goals on the year across all competitions, including three in his last four matches.
