Vince McMahon Ensures WWE Superstar Is Out Of Reach With New Deal
At one point it looked like The Undertaker was on his way out of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) after he took bookings outside of the promotion and was even scheduled to appear at Starrcast II on the same weekend rival promotion All Elite Wrestling (AEW) was hosting their first-ever live show “Double or Nothing” in Las Vegas. But Vince McMahon generally gets what he wants in the pro-wrestling world and he wanted The Undertaker – real name Mark William Callaway – away from any rival promotion.
The WWE chairman was not happy on hearing about The Undertaker’s Starrcast appearance and was keen to sign him on a new deal. The arrival of AEW has made McMahon more alert about the possibilities of losing key members of its roster and he is keen to tie down as many superstars as possible to new deals.
The Undertaker reportedly signed a new deal with WWE in April after which he canceled his planned appearance at the Starrcast II event. Wrestling Observer is now reporting that the deal The Undertaker signed is so long that it might as well be considered a lifetime contract. McMahon has made sure that “the phenom” remains on the payrolls of the WWE away from the lures of rival promotions.
“The new deal Undertaker signed, while not exactly a lifetime contract, is so long that for all intents and purposes it is,” Wrestling Observer said, as quoted on Ringside News.
WWE has reluctantly acknowledged that AEW is going to genuinely threaten their dominance in North America in the last decade. The new promotion has already hosted two packed live shows and recently saw its first-ever televised show, which will be aired on TNT later in the year, sell out within hours of its launch.
The WWE has been struggling for ratings in recent months and McMahon is trying different approaches to being the popularity ratings back up. The promotion had a reunion episode of RAW which saw a plethora of former stars return to the ring while McMahon is also said to be considering using main roster stars in NXT, which is a sister brand of the WWE in order to counter the threat of AEW’s televised show which is expected to air on Wednesday nights.
