Virginia Man Travels To North Carolina To Confront Daughter's Lover, Shoots Him To Death; Arrested
A Virginia man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of his daughter's alleged lover early last month.
James McAlee, 46, is accused of fatally shooting Jared Musgrove, 27 who he said dated his daughter. Authorities said that on July 5, McAlee traveled all the way from Alexandria to Hubert in eastern North Carolina, covering a distance of over 300 miles, to confront Musgrove after learning of the latter’s alleged relationship with his daughter, 11 ALive reported.
During the confrontation, McAlee and Musgrove got into a physical altercation. Things took a violent turn when McAlee drew a gun from his truck and shot Musgrove, the report said.
Authorities responded to the Patriot Place Mobile Home Park, the site of the crime, after receiving a 911 call. The Onslow County Sheriff's Office said that emergency responders found Musgrove with a gunshot wound at the park, NBC Washington reported. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead.
According to a statement from the Onslow County Sheriff's Office, McAlee was arrested on July 25. However, Colonel Chris Thomas with the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office told WITN-TV that McAlee was released after the shooting due to a lack of evidence. He was arrested again Monday and charged with murder. He was initially held without bond. A District Court judge later set the man's bond at $500,000. Court records do not list an attorney for him, according to 11 ALive.
Musgrove's mother, Jara Musgrove, told WITN-TV that the victim is the father of a 2-year-old child. He was reportedly shot twice. "We know everybody was drinking. It was 4th of July. Everybody was partying and having cookouts. And I’m not saying Jared is an Angel, but Jared never would have believed he was so naive that he never would have thought that guy would shoot him," the mother told the outlet.
Jara penned a heartfelt note on Facebook following her son's death. "I can’t even describe the feeling of knowing someone murdered my child," she wrote in the post. "The grief is so unbearable. That final look at my dead son just took a piece of my soul."
