Church & Dwight Co., Inc. (CHD) has recalled five types of Vitafusion gummy vitamins due to possible contamination of a metallic mesh material in the product.

The recall affects select Vitafusion product lots manufactured between Oct. 29, 2020, and Nov. 3, 2020. The contaminated vitamins were sold in-store and through online retailers between Nov. 13, 2020, and April 9, 2021.

The lot of vitamins recalled include Vitafusion Kids Melatonin 50-count gummies with the UPC number 0-27917-00170-8, Vitafusion MultiVites 150-count gummies with the UPC number 0-27917-01919-2, Vitafusion Fiber Well 220-count gummies with the UPC 0-27917-01984-0, Vitafusion Melatonin 44-count gummies with the UPC number 0-27917-28011-0, Vitafusion SleepWell 250-count gummies with the UPC number 0-27917-02524-7, Vitafusion Fiber Well 90-count gummies with the UPC number 0-27917-01890-4, and Vitafusion Melatonin 140-count gummies with the UPC number 0-27917-02671-8.

The company warns that consuming the contaminated vitamins could cause damage to the digestive tract. A 2021 review of 21 cases involving foreign objects in the gastrointestinal tract found 52.38 percent of patients had to undergo an emergency laparotomy surgery. The procedure requires an incision and allows doctors to look at the abdominal organs to assist with diagnosing problems in the abdomen.

Customers who have purchased the recalled products should stop consumption immediately. Before disposing of the Vitafusion gummy vitamins, customers can contact the consumer affairs team at (800) 981-4710 for a full refund and any questions.

However, those who experience an injury or illness from the product can reach out to Safety Call at (888) 234-1828.

The voluntary recall of the vitamins comes after the company investigated two consumer reports about the possible presence of metallic mesh material in product lots.
