‘The Voice’: Battle Round Begins; Christina Aguilera Chooses Jesse Campbell
The Voice battle began on March 5, after the judges selected 12 people each from a blind audition. Judges Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green in the battle rounds will choose a song for two of their team members to sing and the best performer advances into the finals, according to MTV music.
Out of the 48 finalists, the number will be halved over the next four weeks, leaving 24 of them to compete for viewers' vote in the live show beginning on April 2.
The first to enter the battle round was team Adam’s Tony Lucca and Chris Cauley. The pair hit the stage with U2’s mega-anthem “Beautiful Day.” The pair was mentored by Alanis Morissette and Robin Thicke. Judges Christina, Cee Lo were impressed by Lucca but Blake preferred Cauley. However, at the end Lucca won the performance and got a chance to continue The Voice.
Second performance was by team Blake’s Raelynn beating out Adley Stump singing “Freefalling” by Tomy Petty. Stump was mentored by American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson while Raelynn was mentored by Blake’s wife Miranda Lambert. Both the singers got good feedback but Blake surprised many by choosing Raelynn over Stump.
Blake’s second team battle came next with Jordis Unga battling out Brian Fuentes singing Morrisette's 1990s staple Ironic in which Blake ended up choosing Jordis.
The third performance was from Cee Lo’s team, who paired Cheesa against Angie Johnson. Coach Cee Lo gave the singers the 1980s classic “Total Eclipse of the Heart” for singing. Cheesa was mentored by Babyface and Johnson was mentored by R&B hitmaker Ne-Yo. Judges Blake and Christina chose Johnson and Adam and Cee Lo chose Cheesa. But ultimately the decision was in the hands of Cee Lo who chose Cheesa.
The next performance was from team Xtina. Coach Christina paired Chris Mann and Monique Banabou performing on Celine Dion’s ‘The Power Love.” Lionel Richie and Jewel mentored the pair. At the end Christina chose Mann to move for the live show.
The last performance of the night was a showstopper from Team Christina. Christina paired up gospel singers Anthony Evans and Jesse Campbell who performed on Alicia Keys' If I Ain't Got You. Show host Carson Daley called the pair’s performance as the a heavyweight battle. Judges too praised the last performance of the night. For Coach Christina it was a tough decision to choose between the two, but she decided to keep Campbell for the live shows.
