'The Voice' Top 20 Perform Live: Recap Of Tuesday Night's Performances [SPOILERS]
The fifth season of “The Voice” premiered on NBC Sept. 23 with the first blind auditions, and another first for the show started Monday, with live performances by the top 20 contenders that have made it this far, beyond the battle rounds.
The top 20 will now compete one-on-one, singing songs that they and their respective coaches have agreed upon. After the live performances, viewers get to vote on the artists who will stay to sing another day. On Tuesday, the artists from team Cee Lo and team Christina performed. Before the performances, Christina Aguilera joined band A Great Big World to perform their new single “Say Something.”
Team Cee Lo’s Amber Nicole singing “Wasting All These Tear,” by Cassadee Pope. Nicole was stolen in the knockout rounds by coach Cee Lo. Nicole chose to sing this song because it’s a challenging country song. Green believed that she would do this song justice because it would bring her to another level artistically, and show that she can be versatile. After the performance, coach Adam tells Nicole that her performance was great because she chose a different route. Coach Blake tells her that it’s hard for to imagine anyone else doing that song besides his season 3 winner, Cassadee Pope, but she did a good job. Coach Christina tells Nicole that she did her “own thing” with that song and she did great. Finally, Coach Cee Lo tells Nicole that she looked beautiful and that the song wasn’t a challenge for her because she did a great job. Team Cee Lo’s Jonny Gray singing “Bittersweet Symphony,” The Verve. Ex-military man Jonny chose to do this song because coach Cee Lo says he represents that American vocal that is missing in today’s musical world. Gray says he’s ready to bring the live emotion to the song. Coach Cee Lo says it’s important the he conveys the message on the song. After the performance, coach Adam tells Gray that he “loves his voice” and his attitude during the song was perfect. Coach Christina tells Gray that she agrees with Adam and his precision throughout the song was amazing. Coach Cee Lo gave the final words saying “a great job for one of his favorite songs.” Green continues by telling Gray the sincerity in his voice made the performance even better. Team Cee Lo’s Tamara Chauniece singing “I Will Survive,” by Gloria Gaynor. Coach Cee Lo chose this song with Chauniece because she wants to sing something different than the gospel music she usually does. Coach Cee Lo says the song has “girl power” written all over it. Chauniece said she wants to “push the envelope” and that’s exactly what coach Cee Lo did. After the performance, coach Adam told Chauniece that she had “her best performance at the best time.” Coach Blake told Chauniece that “she looks absolutely beautiful” and she “did the song great.” Coach Cee Lo told her that she did the song justice and did a fantastic job. Team Cee Lo’s Kat Robichaud singing “She Keeps Me Warm,” by Mary Lambert. Glam Rocker Kat Robichaud came on the voice to pursue her solo career after breaking with her band. Coach Cee Lo chose this song for Robichaud because he says it’s important that people realize the extent of her vocal range. Robichaud relates the song because she thinks about her husband, who is always there for her, as she’s singing it. Coach Cee Lo tells her that she needs to have conviction with this song. After the performance, coach Adam said he was “a huge fan from the beginning.” Coach Christina appreciates her control but wanted her to soar a little higher on the notes. Coach Cee Lo said the song is so personal to both him and Robinchaud and that he did a great job with the song. Team Cee Lo’s Caroline Pennell singing “We’re Going to Be Friends,” by The White Stripes. Coach Cee Lo gave the 17-year-old indie artist this song because it’s a sweet song and it would be perfect for her. Pennell works on the song to put her own “Caroline twist” on it. After the performance, coach Adam tells Pennell that her voice is purely “her” without influence of other artists and it was incredible. Coach Blake says, “I could literally get an amputation and if I heard her voice all I would be thinking about it cotton candy.” Finally, coach Cee Lo tells Caroline that her performance was wonderful and he thinks America will love her. Team Christina’s Josh Logan singing “Crazy,” by Gnarls Barkley. Father Josh Logan says he found a way to be a musician while still being a great dad. Logan wants a career that he can show off to his son. Coach Christina chose “Crazy” for Logan because she says he’s “real with what he does” even though it is coach Cee Lo’s song. Logan will perform the song with a guitar with coach Christina thinks will give him an edge. After the performance, coach Cee Lo gave Logan credit for singing his song and he was “honored” that any artist would sing his song. Coach Adam tells Logan that his one criticism is that the runs were overwhelming and it should have been more scaled back. Team Christina’s Olivia Henken singing “Roar,” by Katy Perry. Kentucky native Henken says coach Christina turning around for her is the greatest thing that ever happened to her. Coach Christina chose this song because she wanted Henken to blend rock with country. Coach Christina told her to tell a story with the song and that she needs to be dynamic enough to own the song. After the performance, coach Blake said he surprised how well a country voice does on a rock-pop song. Coach Christina told Henken that she did an amazing job as a country artist to be able to recreate a pop song. Team Christina’s Stephanie Anne Johnson singing, “Georgia On My Mind,” by Ray Charles. Cruise ship soul singer Johnson says she “wants to reach a higher number of people” with her voice. Coach Christina chose this song because she has a unique voice. Johnson agrees with the decision because it reminds her of her grandmother who loves this song. After the performance, coach Cee Lo says he has mixed emotions because he’s “entertained, amazed and jealous.” Coach Adam tells Johnson that he liked her version of the song. Coach Christina tells Johnson that she did a wonderful job and her voice has an amazing quality to it that will allow her to do anything. Team Christina’s Matthew Schuler singing “Wrecking Ball,” by Miley Cyrus. Indie rocker Matthew Schuler was a student before he came on “The Voice.” Coach Christina chose this song for Schuler because, like a wrecking ball, he stormed into the competition and blew everyone’s mind. Coach Christina told him that he has to show his vulnerability. After the performance, coach Cee Lo said “we’re friends, Matt but I hate you because I hate how much I love you.” Coach Adam said he “shares Cee Lo’s pain” because he wishes he were on his team. Coach Blake told his team that Schuler was the guy to beat and that he was “so good.” Coach Christina said “they say they don’t like you, it’s because they love you.” She also noted the charisma and emotion he brings to anything he sings. Team Christina’s Jacquie Lee singing “I Put A Spell On You,” Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. 16-year-old Lee is the youngest artist in the competition and chose Aguilera to be her coach during the blind auditions. Coach Christina chose this song for Lee because her voice is far beyond her years and this song represents that. Coach Christina tells her that she needs to work on her emotion throughout the performance. After the performance, coach Christina gave her artist a standing ovation. Coach Cee Lo tells Lee that her performance was “the absolute best” and that she is the future. Coach Adam tells her that her performance was unbelievable. NBC will air a special episode of 'The Voice' this Thursday. The episode will be the results show, where viewers will save two artists from each team, each coach will save one, and two will be sent home. The episode will air Thursday at 8 p.m EST.
