“The Walking Dead” has tapped actress Margot Bingham to play a key role in Season 11 of the AMC zombie apocalypse drama.

The “New Amsterdam” actress, who was heard but not seen during Season 10, is expected to play the character Stephanie, Deadline reported. Bingham guest-starred as the voice of an elusive woman on the other end of a radio operated by Josh McDermitt’s Eugene.

The character does not give her name, but she forms a connection with Eugene. She even accepts Eugene’s invitation to keep in touch.

In Robert Kirkman’s “The Walking Dead” comics, the source material for the AMC drama, Eugene’s radio friend is revealed to be Stephanie. She is a resident of the Commonwealth, a network of settlements comprising nearly 50,000 survivors, and later forms a romantic relationship with Eugene after his girlfriend is murdered by the Whisperers.

“The Walking Dead” showrunner Angela Kang revealed that Eugene kept up with the interaction with Stephanie, but it was not because he was looking for a new community. Loneliness could be the answer.

“There’s a deep element of he just wants a human connection and he doesn’t exactly know what that might wind up being, but he feels, for a moment, he’s found a like-minded soul out there,” she told Entertainment Weekly last year.

“Because what are the chances that somebody else is just out on the open wave, hoping to find somebody? And, of course, all the communities and the pragmatic things that come with that become a consideration, but he’s starting from [a] very human place of ‘I just wish there was somebody out there for me,’” she continued.

“The Walking Dead” Season 11 will introduce viewers to the Commonwealth, and the show will move away from its usual rural backdrop to more urban settings.

The Commonwealth, as fans of the comic books know, is based in Ohio and is governed by Pamela Milton. She clashes with Rick Grimes when he attempts to bring reforms to the Commonwealth, such as the introduction of a democratic system that aims to distribute power among its citizens.

AMC’s “The Walking Dead” will be part of the Comic-Con@Home virtual panel lineup. The air date for “The Walking Dead” Season 10 finale, which was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, will be announced during Comic-Con@Home.
