Stocks fell further on Thursday as a warning by General Motors about potential bankruptcy curbed investors' appetite for riskier assets, while a pullback in energy prices dragged energy shares.

S&P financial index <.GSPF> fell 6.8 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dropped 141.94 points, or 2.06 percent, to 6,733.90. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> fell 16.84 points, or 2.36 percent, to 696.03.
