Stocks rose on Monday as investors scooped up beaten-down shares after the recent sell-off after reassuring manufacturing data and Exxon Mobil Corp's upbeat results fueled a strong start to February. The market's gains were broad-based.

Based on the latest available data, the Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> rose 118.20 points, or 1.17 percent, to finish unofficially at 10,185.53. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> gained 15.32 points, or 1.43 percent, to close unofficially at 1,089.19. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> climbed 23.85 points, or 1.11 percent, to end unofficially at 2,171.20.

The benchmark S&P 500 is still off 5.3 percent from its 15-month closing high reached on January 19.
