Walmart+ Vs Amazon Prime: Here's How The Membership Program Perks Compare
As Walmart (WMT) rolls out its Walmart+ membership program, the retailer will go head-to-head with Amazon Prime (AMZN). But what exactly is the difference between the two programs and which one has better perks?
Overall, Walmart+ and Amazon Prime cost about the same. Walmart+ is priced at $98 a year or $12.95 a month. Amazon costs slightly more at $119 a year or $12.99 a month. Both memberships come with a trial period. Walmart’s is 15 days while Amazon’s is 30 days.
Included with Walmart+ is free unlimited delivery from its stores. Amazon Prime also offers free grocery delivery from Amazon Fresh and free one or two-day delivery on millions of eligible products. Same-day delivery is available for Prime members on qualifying orders over $35.
Unlike Amazon Prime, Walmart+ offers fuel discounts at its nearly 2,000 Walmart, Murphy USA, and Murphy Express fuel stations. Members will save 5 cents a gallon. The company said it plans to add Sam’s Club fuel stations in the near future.
Walmart+ also gives members access to tools such as Scan & Go to make in-store shopping faster and easier. The in-app option allows customers to scan their items as they shop, using Walmart Pay to purchase their orders without contact.
But unlike the new offering, Amazon Prime has a video element to its membership with Prime Video, which allows users to stream movies, TV shows, and Amazon Originals for free. Prime Music and Prime Gaming are also offered. Members can also store, print, and share photos on the Amazon site and receive reading benefits such as unlimited access to eBooks, magazines, comic books, and more.
While Amazon Prime offers members a series of additional benefits with their membership, Walmart said its list of services available through Walmart+ will grow, keeping the door open for more options that will continue to rival Prime in the future.
Shares of Amazon Prime were trading at $3,145.18 as of 12:14 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, up $42.21 or 1.36% while shares of Walmart were trading at $137.98, up 66 cents of 0.48% at the same time.
