Warriors News: Dubs Add Former Chicago Bulls Legend's Nephew For Frontcourt Depth
The Golden State Warriors will be going through the NBA preseason with their frontcourt regulars on the sidelines. Already besieged by injuries, the Dubs have added some personnel upfront when they announced the addition of an undrafted rookie named Kavion Pippen.
For those who know their basketball well, the first thing that comes to mind is who Kavion Pippen is? Is he related to Scottie Pippen? The answer is yes. Standing 6-foot-10, Kavion Pippen played two seasons at Three Rivers Community College before transferring to South Illinois. The 22-year-old went undrafted during the 2019 NBA Draft, the Golden State Warriors announced on their official Twitter account.
In college, Pippen averaged 12 points in two seasons. Last fall, he normed 5.6 rebounds and 2.0 blocks. The 22-year-old center was given a non-guaranteed deal. Depending on how injuries to stars like Kevon Looney and Willie Cauley-Stein persist, the 6-foot-10 cager could have a serious crack at making the Dubs lineup.
The Warriors opted to go with Pippen over veteran player Hasheem Thabeet. Golden State opted to go with a player who had more range and the nephew of the Chicago Bulls legend prove all that. However, he may need to thread the needle to make the final roster.
Golden State does not have any roster spots although there are some players who could be waived or let go. The Dubs are sorely lacking in size. They did add Marquese Chriss who had an impressive NBA preseason debut. Aside from Cauley-Stein and Looney, the only other big guy they have is Alen Smailagic (also out with an ankle injury).
For Pippen to make the cut, he will need to churn out an impressive performance to gain the nod of head coach Steve Kerr. Should he do that, the Warriors may need to cut Devyn Marble to make room, the Golden State of Mind reported.
Whether it be Pippen or someone else, the Warriors need to find bigger guys to help out down low. Draymond Green has proven he can fill in the center position when needed, especially when they play small ball basketball. But if they are to make a good run at the NBA playoffs, at the least, the reality of it all is they need to add more personnel, most likely young guys who have potential.
