The Boston Celtics stunned the Golden State Warriors with a 120-108 road win in Game 1 of the 2022 NBA Finals. If the Warriors can’t even up the series in Game 2 Sunday night, Golden State might find itself in a hole that it’s unable to escape.

No team has ever come back to win the NBA Finals after losing both Game 1 and Game 2 at home. With the series far from over, the Game 2 odds favor Warriors, who let Game 1 slip away after leading for most of the contest.

Golden State is a four-point favorite in Game 2 at FanDuel Sportsbook. The Warriors have -166 odds to win outright, while the Celtics are +140 underdogs. The Game 2 total is 216.

The Warriors blew a 15-point lead with less than two minutes remaining in Game 1. Boston outscored Golden State 40-16 in the fourth quarter on the strength of nine three-pointers in the final 12 minutes of regulation. The Celtics finished the game a remarkable 21-of-41 from three-point range.

It wasn’t just the Celtics who were hot from behind the arc. The Warriors made 19 three-pointers of their own, six of which Stephen Curry nailed in the first quarter.

Curry finished with 34 points on 25 field-goal attempts. The two-time MVP outplayed Boston’s superstar. Jayson Tatum had a miserable shooting night, converting just three of his 17 attempts from the field.

The role players were the difference in the series opener, particularly in the fourth quarter. Jaylen Brown sparked Boston’s comeback, and Al Horford finished it. In his NBA Finals debut after 141 career playoff games, Horford led Boston with 26 points. The trio of Horford, Marcus Smart and Derrick White scored 65 points on 34 shots.

"I'll give them credit, they made 21 threes, they were moving the ball really well and they had us on our heels," Warriors head coach Steve Kerr told reporters after the game. "They made a good push to start the fourth and they kept that momentum going. It's going to be tough to beat Boston if they're making 21 threes and they're getting a combined 11 from [Al] Horford and [Derrick] White.

"Those guys, give them credit, they knocked down every big shot in the fourth quarter. Boston just played a brilliant quarter, they came in and earned the win."

Andrew Wiggins was the only Warriors’ player besides Curry who had a good game offensively. Klay Thompson scored 15 points on 14 shots. Draymond Green and Jordan Poole were an abysmal 4-of-19 from the field.

Those shooting numbers should balance out in Game 2 when the Warriors are desperate for a victory in front of their home crowd. Golden State’s defense should also improve. The Celtics had plenty of wide-open threes in Game 1, most of which Boston made.

Robert Williams was outplayed by Kevon Looney, who had six offensive rebounds and five assists. It could be a problem for the Celtics going forward if Boston’s center is still being hampered by the knee injury that has plagued him all postseason.

This is meant to be a long series. The Warriors are unlikely to head on the road down 0-2 in the NBA Finals.
