Warriors vs. Lakers, Featuring LeBron, Will Be 'Off The Charts': Steve Kerr
Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is intrigued to see LeBron James in a Los Angeles Lakers jersey when the new season kicks off.
James became a free agent earlier this summer and proceeded to sign a four-year, $154 million deal with the Lakers. It marks the first time the 33-year-old will play in the Western Conference and that means facing the Warriors more often.
While at the Cleveland Cavaliers, James usually played the reigning champions twice during the regular season followed by their meetings in the last four NBA Finals. The Warriors currently have a 20-9 record over James in the past four seasons, including regular and postseason.
However, with the Lakers in the West, James will now face the Bay Area side four times during the regular season and could face them in another potential seven games should they meet during the playoffs.
Add in the fact that the two teams are geographical rivals, both based in California, and Kerr believes their games are going to be ones to remember.
"Well, we were already seeing him seven or nine times in a season so we're used to seeing him a lot," Kerr said after the second day of training camp on Wednesday. "I think the main thing that intrigues me is seeing him in a Laker uniform because the Lakers are such an obvious geographical rivalry for us, same division, a lot of history, mostly in the Lakers' favor."
"But you think about the divisional aspect of it and LeBron wearing the purple and gold. The games are going to be awesome, the atmosphere at our games this year with the Lakers will be off the charts and everybody's looking forward to that," he added.
Kerr is not the only one excited by what will be a renewed rivalry between the two franchises.
Warriors owner Joe Lacob recently spoke about it last week as well when talking about how he expected James to move to the Lakers, which he feels will only benefit the league.
"LA-San Francisco is a great rivalry," Lacob said. "LeBron against the Warriors is a great rivalry. It's exciting. You're asking about it because it's gonna be fun. And I'm looking forward to it."
Warriors star Stephen Curry also mentioned the rivalry in September and expects certain games to get heated.
"And a whole new-look Laker team with some of the young kids. It should be fun, the Bay Area and L.A. and the whole thing," Curry said. "When I first got into the league [the] Oracle [arena] would be buzzing any time the Lakers came in."
"There probably will be a revolution of Laker fans that are going to try to creep in but I hope Bay Area and Dub Nation we keep control of that competition because we're on top right now," he added.
The Warriors and Lakers will play each other twice in preseason before their first official meeting takes place on Christmas Day at the Oracle Arena in Oakland.
