Was Money To Blame For Mary Kay Letourneau's And Vili Fualaau's Split?
As Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau call it quits and move to legally separate, reports of the financial troubles they were facing in their marriage have surfaced. The couple’s money woes may have contributed to the end of their marriage, causing the couple to split up after 14 years together.
“There have been money troubles,” a source close to Letourneau told People. “That’s why they’ve had to talk about their relationship for paid interviews; they’ve needed the cash. Do you think they’ve enjoyed talking about her past as a sex offender, and him as a 12-year-old? And answering questions about how often they had sex? No. It’s embarrassing. But that’s how they’ve supplemented their income for years.”
LeTourneau, a former sixth-grade teacher, had a sexual relationship with Fualaau, who was 12-years-old at the time. She served seven years for the crime of child rape and is a registered sex offender in the state of Washington where they live.
Today, Letourneau works as a legal assistant while Fualaau works at a home improvement store and has dabbled in the DJ world. The couple has two daughters together, Audrey and Georgia, which Letourneau became pregnant with before Fualaau was 15-years-old.
“He isn’t pulling in the cash , and she didn’t make much money as a legal assistant,” the source said. “So they have to sell their story to anyone who will pay them, even if they don’t want to. Their past has caught up with them.”
The couple married in 2005, and today Letourneau is 57 while Fualaau is 35. Fualaau filed for legal separation in 2017, which Letourneau contested, hoping instead for a reconciliation. When the reconciliation efforts didn’t work, the couple moved forward with their legal separation, which is expected to occur by Aug. 1.
