Washington Nationals Deliver Most Lopsided Loss In New York Mets' Franchise History

The New York Mets suffered their worst-ever defeat in a 25-4 loss against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park, Washington D.C. on Tuesday night.
At one point in the fifth inning, the visitors, who didn't deal any of its big names before the MLB trade deadline, were losing 19-0.

Mets pitcher Steven Matz, one of the players rumored to be on the move, gave up eight hits and seven runs in just 2/3 of an inning. Things didn't get better when Jacob Rhame took over, as he would go on to give up seven hits and six runs in the next two innings.
The Nationals scored three runs in the fourth and fifth innings as well before finally being held scoreless in the sixth. The Mets would score a run in the seventh inning but things would get worse thereon after.
Mets shortstop Jose Reyes gave up six runs in the eighth inning, which included two homers.
"It's a tough loss," Mets manager Mickey Callaway said, as per NewJersey.com. "It's embarrassing. We got to do better than that. Even to throw Jose Reyes out there and the guys hit him like they did, you don't see that in (batting practice)."
"Those guys were locked in. They came out tonight and beat us up pretty bad," he said.
The most lopsided defeat was when the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Chicago Cubs 22–0 in 1975.
However, the New York side were able to avoid holding that distinction when they scored three runs in the ninth inning against Shawn Kelley. Still, it was their biggest loss in franchise history, worse than their 26-7 defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies in 1985.
"I've been going through a little bit of a dead arm phase," Matz said after the game in which he produced the worst start of his career. "I'm trying to work through it. Got to find a way to get through it."
The Nationals, meanwhile, set their own franchise record of runs scored in a game. In addition, the Nationals scored the most runs in an MLB game since the Texas Rangers scored 30 against the Baltimore Orioles in Aug. 2007.
Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman also became the franchise's all-time hit leader with 1,695 hits after his RBI single in the first inning. The win takes the Washington side to 53-53 while the Mets are now 44-60.
