Washington Redskins Are Playoff Longshots With Games Against Titans, Eagles Left On Schedule
The Washington Redskins are still in the playoff hunt with two games left on the regular-season schedule. Down to their fourth starting quarterback in 2018, the team isn’t expected to survive for much longer.
The Redskins are considered to be a longshot to reach the postseason. While they are still in the race for the NFC East and a wild-card berth, both possibilities could very well be gone by the end of Week 16.
It’s going to be hard for the Dallas Cowboys to blow their lead atop the NFC East. Dallas is a game ahead of the Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles, but they own the tiebreaker over both teams. That means the Cowboys will clinch the division with one more win or a loss by both the Eagles and Redskins.
Five NFC teams are fighting for the two wild-card berths. The Seattle Seahawks are the No.5 seed with a half-game lead over the Minnesota Vikings. Minnesota is a half-game ahead of Washington and Philadelphia. The Carolina Panthers are technically in the race, but they are all but eliminated at 1.5 games out of the No.6 seed.
Of the four teams with a realistic chance to earn a spot on Wild-Card Weekend, Washington is the least likely to sneak their way into the postseason. Only two teams are bigger underdogs in Week 16 than the Redskins, who are getting 10 points in their road game against the Tennessee Titans, according to OddsShark.
Philadelphia is a slight favorite at home against the Houston Texans in Week 16. They’ll visit Washington in a Week 17 matchup that could have playoff implications.
Seattle is a win away from reaching the playoffs. They’ll end the season with home games against the Kansas City Chiefs and Arizona Cardinals.
Minnesota is favored on the road against the Detroit Lions Sunday. The Vikings will host the Chicago Bears in the season finale.
Washington’s playoff hopes will disappear if they lose and Minnesota wins. A potential tiebreaker between the Redskins and Seahawks is still undecided. The Redskins need to beat the Eagles to have the tiebreaker over Philadelphia.
The Texans defeated the Redskins when Alex Smith suffered a season-ending leg injury. Washington lost their next three games with Colt McCoy and Mark Sanchez starting at quarterback. The team won for the first time since Nov. 11 last week when they beat the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road with Josh Johnson under center.
Johnson completed 16 of 25 passes for 151 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in the 16-13 victory. The quarterback also had nine rushes for 49 yards in his first start since 2011.
Jacksonville has one win since starting the season 3-1. The Redskins will now visit a Titans’ team that’s won three straight games and is fighting for a spot in the playoffs.
