Basketball referees are not spares from criticism, especially when they make crucial calls.
High school games are not spared from it, but this one that happened at the Pacers Athletic Center will go down as one of the violent and unusual melees that anyone will recall.
With 16 seconds left in the first quarter of the match between the Indiana Elite and Baylor Basketball, the play was stopped and a Baylor coach argued with the game official.
A technical was called by the referee on the coach, and this led the Baylor side to pick up their bags and leave the court, the Indianapolis Star reported.
The referee tried to explain his case as the Baylor girls team was leaving the floor. At some point, a random spectator came up within feet of the game official to capture some footage.
Then out of the blue, the game official threw a haymaker at the spectator and a scuffle broke out.
It was not clear if the one taking the video said something to earn the referee’s rage.
A fracas ensued with a player from the Baylor side coming to the aid of the man who could be allegedly the father of the girl.
Through the chaos, the referee and the man went at it. But the referee got the worse end of it when he got a WWE-like bodyslam from the spectator.
Others came in to get some hits at the game official. A video can be seen below.
"We are disappointed that this altercation happened, as we strive to provide a great experience for families," a statement from the Pacers Athletic Center (PAC) read via USA Today.
The event was hosted by youth basketball organizer Exposure Basketball. According to PAC president Evan Suttner, the two teams have been banned and will not be allowed back in future events.
"The event staff removed the involved parties from the remainder of the tournament and will not welcome them back to future events," the PAC statement added.
Identities of officials and participants were not divulged. The Westfield police are currently investigating the incident.
