A man was cited for obstructing an officer after he was caught fleeing from a retail store after "stealing" a banana, while wearing a gorilla mask and a diaper as part of a prank.

The man (who was not identified) entered a West Milwaukee Walmart store Tuesday in the get-up and spent a few minutes in the store before fleeing with the "loot," as part of the prank which was staged to get internet fame, a report said.

The man's friend, Tony Kolstad, recorded and streamed the incident on Facebook Live.

In the video, the man wearing the mask is seen entering the store and randomly walking around the place.

At some points he turns around, directing the cameraman in a hush manner to be quiet. Though staff members and customers were surprised by his presence, they weren't much affected by his monkeying around.

The man is also seen shaking his hands with some people in the store, and some children's voices are heard saying: "Mommy, look there's a monkey there."

The video recorder is heard referring to the man in costume as "naughty chimpy."

As the man keeps walking in the store, he goes to staffers greeting them and shaking hands; soon the mood lightens and people are heard laughing and calling out to the man.

Finally, the man gets hold of a few bananas and tries running away with them when the man recording the act says: "They are not free, naughty chimpy!"

However, the so-called chimpy doesn't pay any heed.

Soon a member from Loss Prevention at Walmart confronts the man after he has taken the bananas and makes to go out of the store.

Meanwhile, West Milwaukee Police responded to the situation, but the man managed to run from them.

But soon he was caught and cited for obstructing an officer, cbs58 reported.

Police told WISN 12 News, an ABC affiliate, that the group behind the act had actually bought the bananas in advance and then carried out the prank of pretending to steal the fruits.

Regarding the costume man's citation by the police, the West Milwaukee Police Chief said: "He wanted to gain some fame, it was an expensive way to do it," according to cbs58.

Kolstad admitted that some people might have got scared or confused by the prank, but he said: "Naughty Chimpy is misunderstood."

Walmart is not new to these staged acts which are recorded for the purpose of gaining 15 minutes of internet fame.

In June 2015, two young men in Kentucky were arrested after one of them ran naked through a Walmart store in South Williamson in what was supposedly a prank video.

In the video posted on YouTube, one of the pranksters is seen wearing just a Halloween mask and shoes and running across the store screaming that "I'm on fire" and dousing himself with two gallons of milk.

Both were arrested on charges of indecent exposure, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief for the stunt.
