  • Ray won the UFN light heavyweight championship

Given the high-impact nature of the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA), it’s no longer surprising when the competitors sustain injuries.

While injuries are commonplace in a contact sport such as MMA, it’s always an unfortunate sight, especially if it’s of the more gruesome nature, like what took place in a regional MMA event in Sydney, Australia.

In the main event of Urban Fight Night 4 this past Saturday, Dean Maxwell and Randall Ray faced off for the promotion’s light heavyweight belt.

Heading into the title bout, Maxwell was undefeated in two pro bouts, while Ray was 9-3.

The two hard-hitters exchanged kicks, but it was Ray who had the final say as he connected on a strong calf kick on Maxwell’s right leg.

When Maxwell tried to put some weight on his leg, it snapped and he crumbled to the canvas.

Aptly nicknamed “The Limb Reaper” for his submission skills, Ray claimed yet another limb--this time by strikes--and captured the Urban Fight NIght light heavyweight championship for his efforts.

According to Urban Fight Night Promoter and former UFC fighter Suman Mokhtarian via Nolan King of MMA Junkie, Maxwell suffered a broken fibula and tibia, which needed plates and screws to be repaired.

On top of that, he would not be able to walk for three months.

The leg kick or calf kick has been one of the most effective weapons in MMA, with fighters like Jose Aldo, Thiago Alves, known to be some of the sport's most devastating kickers.

Most recently, Dustin Poirier used leg kicks to his advantage to wear down and eventually defeat Conor McGregor in their lightweight contest at UFC 257 in January.

The low kicks have also been the culprit for a handful of gruesome MMA injuries, with the most notable being Anderson’ Silva’s case, when he broke his shin against Chris Weidman.

The difference in Silva’s case was that he was the one on the offensive, while Weidman was simply playing defense.

Silva’s low kick was checked by Weidman’s knee, causing it to break and eventually snap when the Brazilian legend tried to put weight on it. It was definitely one of the more gruesome injuries in MMA history.
