A 40-year-old police officer was forced to leave the bride at the altar and run toward the sound of gunfire after a shootout between cops and alleged criminals interrupted his wedding in Brazil last week.

Rodrigo Prujansky, a military police officer, was listening to his bride recite her vows at the Condominio Bora Bora Barra Resort Real in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro last Saturday when gunfire suddenly erupted, Yahoo Australia reported.

Guests ducked to the floor for safety, according to footage from the ceremony obtained by Diário do Nordeste. But Prujansky marched toward where the disturbance was coming from.

The policeman, along with 30 other work colleagues present at the wedding, made their way out of the hall and came across on-duty police officers on the scene.

"We were surprised by an exchange of fire," Prujansky said. "As it was very close, we decided to check out the situation. We act like a sheepdog, we are trained to protect the flock."

"At the time, we grouped together automatically and came across a riot cop who directed us, and we started to follow him through the building," he explained.

The on-duty police officers had been chasing two suspects tied to the kidnapping of a businessman, according to the report.

The two alleged kidnappers, whose names were not disclosed, had been seeking shelter in the same resort where the wedding was taking place.

Before the shootout at the resort, one suspect had died after being shot, while another had managed to escape. The two who were cornered in the resort, however, were arrested. The names of the suspects were not disclosed.

There were reportedly three cars damaged in the shootout. It was not clear if anyone else in the resort had been injured.

The unidentified businessman who was kidnapped was reportedly released unharmed.

After the arrests, Prujansky went back, and the wedding resumed.

"It was fine, we calmed down the guests and started over. Nobody left. Everything was perfect," he said.

Prujansky and his bride, with whom he'd been in a relationship for five years, had originally planned to tie the knot back in 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to postpone the wedding to the recent date.
