It has been a hard season for Russell Westbrook, and it is not getting any better after he got disrespected by Minnesota Timberwolves players Karl-Anthony Towns and Patrick Beverly.
Late in the fourth quarter, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James found a wide-open Westbrook in the corner, primed for making a three-point attempt.
The shot went awry as the ball landed right into the hands of Towns who handed the ball over to Beverly as the Timberwolves called a timeout.
At around the eight-second mark of the clip, this year’s winner of the NBA Three-Point Contest had a bewildered look on his face while yelling out “close the window” and Beverly then mockingly dodged a ball as if it came from out of nowhere.
Westbrook and Beverley’s rivalry dates back to their respective stints with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets.
Their issues with each other kickstarted on April 24, 2013, where Beverley dove for the ball and hit Westbrook on the outside of his right knee in their Game 2 matchup in the first round of the playoffs.
An MRI later revealed that Westbrook had torn his meniscus, and the Beverley incident would spark a beef that was covered in great depth by Secret Base, formerly known as SB Nation.
Since joining the Lakers, Westbrook has been a shell of his former self and has been on the receiving end of jeers and insults from the crowd that went on to include his family.
The 2016-17 NBA league MVP recently spoke out against the “Westbrick” nickname that fans and talking heads have given him due to him consistently missing shots and airballing some of them.
Former NFL tight end turned ESPN analyst Shannon Sharpe responded to Westbrook’s comments and while he agreed that involving the NBA star’s family is crossing the line, the play that he has shown this season cannot be argued against.
As for Towns, the Timberwolves’ franchise cornerstone was certainly feeling confident in himself and his team a game after he dropped the first 60-point game of the NBA season that set both a franchise and personal record.
The 26-year-old from the Dominican Republic later revealed that it was the memory of his parents’ hospitalization due to COVID-19 almost two years to the day and the subsequent passing of his mother that motivated him to go all out against the San Antonio Spurs.
Towns, Beverley and the Timberwolves would go on to defeat the visiting Lakers 124-104 behind the former’s game-high 30 points.
The Timberwolves next face last season's NBA Champions, the Milwaukee Bucks, while the Lakers go up against the Toronto Raptors.
