Watch: Thief Steals SUV From Car Wash While Owner Was Cleaning It
Police in Tulsa, Oklahoma, released CCTV footage Tuesday of a "brazen" suspect who stole a woman's car as she was vacuum-cleaning it at a car wash.
The 45-second-long video, recorded April 24 at 7:15 a.m. CDT (8:15 a.m. EDT), showed a man in a hooded sweatshirt, sweatpants and baseball cap casually walking through the Freedom Car Wash in Tulsa. The suspect kept repeatedly pulling his cap over his eyes as he strolled toward an unidentified woman’s SUV. Both the owner of the car, who was crouching down to clean the well of the passenger-side door, as well as the man who was tending to the exterior of the vehicle, failed to notice the suspect approaching.
The suspect was seen sneaking around the car and getting into the driver’s seat. Then, he turned on the engine and hit reverse, as the owner tried desperately to hold on to the passenger seat of her SUV. For a couple of seconds, the suspect stopped the car, during which the man, who was cleaning the car, ran over to the driver’s seat. After he failed to open the car door, the suspect drove the car in reverse for the second time, dragging the owner along with the car.
Halfway out of the car wash, the owner, who was not identified, was seen taking a “tumble” before losing hold of the passenger’s seat and falling to the ground. Tulsa police said she did not sustain any major injuries as a result of the fall. The footage concluded with the woman calling someone on her cell phone and the man standing beside her staring helplessly as suspect drove away.
The police have asked for the public’s help in identifying and locating the suspect. “If you can help identify this person, please contact the lead Detective Dean at msdean@cityoftulsa.org You can always contact Tulsa Crime Stoppers at 918-596-COPS to remain anonymous and receive a reward,” the department wrote in a Facebook post.
