Watch VIDEO: LeBron James Scores 23 In Fourth Quarter Win Over Nets, Impresses Cavs Teammates
LeBron James went on a fourth-quarter tear Wednesday that even impressed his teammates in a 119-109 win against the Brooklyn Nets at Quicken Loans Arena.
Despite having received several stitches from an accidental collision with Nets center Tyler Zeller in the third quarter, James persevered to score 23 points in the fourth. He poured in 18 consecutive points in the final four minutes — tying the most he’s ever scored in last the five minutes of a game, according to ESPN.
James finished the game with 33 points, 6 rebound and 5 assists, which garnered praise from his teammates. Cavs big man Kevin Love celebrated James' game-winning performance.
"Sometimes it's being aggressive and picking your spots and other times it's, 'Get the hell out of the way,'" Love told reporters after the game. "And tonight, I don't know how many he had straight -- 18 straight -- I mean that was a special fourth-quarter performance, but it seems like he's always done that. But this year in particular, he's done an incredible job of doing that for us."
The four-time MVP is usually effective in late-game situations. James averages 10 points in the fourth quarter, the best in the NBA, according to ESPN. A chunk of his points came from outside the arc, where he was 3-of-4 from 3-point range.
Cavs sharp-shooter Kyle Korver applauded James for improving his long-distance jump shot.
"My man has worked his way into being a real shooter. Like, for real. He can really shoot," Korver said. "His fundamentals, he has worked on it, in this last year that I've been here. His shot is really, really good. You can tell he thinks about it, he studies the game, he studies his own mechanics, he puts in a ton of time and he's confident shooting that shot. He's doing a good job of mixing it up, when to attack the basket and when to shoot it."
The Cavs traded All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving to the Boston Celtics for Isaiah Thomas in July, who has been sidelined with a hip injury. Meanwhile, James has had to take on more of the scoring load until Thomas makes his debut in January.
"My team looks at me to be that scorer now," James said of his duties. "The last couple years, Kyrie obviously being as great as he was in the fourth quarter, we kind of pick our games. There was games half the time that he had it going and, 'Hey, go get it.' There was games half the time where I had it going and I'd go get it. But right now my teammates look at me and they're like, 'OK, like this is your quarter. You've done this your whole career. Let's try to make some things happen.' And it's very important that I try to come through for them."
The Cavs (11-7) will take on the Charlotte Hornets (8-9) Friday at the Quicken Loans Arena.
