Watch Video: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Rally For Immigrants On White House Lawn

Among throngs of pro-immigration supporters, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York rallied Tuesday morning in favor of permanent residency protections for nationals with Temporary Protected Status (TPS), in front of the White House.

Along with fellow Democrat Rep. Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Ocasio-Cortez stirred members of the crowd with demands to "see the humanity" in TPS holders, many of which face the looming threat of having their statuses revoked by the Trump administration.

TPS can only be given to those originating from a strict set of countries afflicted by traumatic events such as natural disasters or armed conflicts. It can only be continuous upon renewal every six to 18 months, a span that is becoming shorter under the supervision of the Department of Homeland Security.

"We are here to make sure that all TPS recipients become permanent members of the United States of America," Ocasio-Cortez told the crowd.

There have been no confirmed reports about the size of the crowd that showed up in wet and cold conditions.

"This is not charity, this is what you have earned," said Pressley. "We will not stop until you get it. Residency now."

"Aqui estamos y no nos vamos," Ocasio-Cortez, who is of Puerto Rican descent, chanted in Spanish along with the crowd, translated as, "We are here and we’re not leaving."

Ocasio-Cortez then went on to emphasize that the fight for immigration rights was one for a "longstanding principle...that the people whose hands have built this country" should be allowed to stay in the United States.

"[Immigrants should] be honored and respected in the United States of America," Ocasio-Cortez added.

Trump has sought to end TPS as part of his anti-immigration agenda, which has included efforts to secure funding for a border wall, a travel ban for Muslim-major countries and changes to H1B visa rules.

In October, the Trump administration sought to end TPS for over 300,000 immigrants who fled from El Salvador, Nicaragua, Haiti, Sudan and other countries. A California federal court granted an injunction against the move.
