Contigo, a bottling brand that is part of Newell Brands Inc. (NWL), has issued a sizeable recall of its children’s water bottles. According to the recall, the spout on the nearly 6 million products poses a choking hazard for young users due to its tendency to detach from the rest of the bottle.

"Contigo identified that the water bottle’s clear silicone spout in some cases may detach from the lid posing a potential choking hazard. No injuries have been reported. But, out of an abundance of caution, we encourage consumers to find out if they have an affected water bottle lid and order a free replacement product," the company notes on its website.

About 5.7 million bottles were sold in the U.S. in addition to about 157,000 sold in Canada and about 28,000 sold in Mexico. This is the second time recently that this specific line of products, the Kids Cleanable Water Bottles, has been recalled for this issue.

Contigo has received a total of 427 reports from customers who said the spout became detached, 27 of which involved the small piece being found in the mouths of children.

The only bottles affected by the recall are the ones with a black cover and base for the spout are included in this recall. They were sold at places like Target, Walmart, and Costco since April 2018.

Those who have purchased these products are encouraged to take them away from children and stop using them immediately.

These products had been recalled for the spout issue in August. At the time, Contigo provided replacement lids that are said would fix the issue. Now, these replacement lids are to blame for this latest recall.

Those who own these recalled bottles can return them and get a free replacement. For more information on the issue, customers can call Contigo at (888) 262-0622 or visit www.gocontigo.com/recall.

Newell Brands acquired Contigo in 2014.
