WBC Champion Comments On Amanda Nunes-Jake Paul Boxing Match: 'It's Just Not Fair'
KEY POINTS
- Devin Haney is against the proposed Jake Paul vs. Amanda Nunes fight
- Haney feels Paul should face a man, not a woman
- Nunes remains dangerous, but an inter-gender fight is questionable
Internet sensation Jake Paul is looking for a fight, and most know that he is set to face retired mixed martial artist Ben Askren.
But after that, there are other personalities open to facing the 23-year-old to teach him a lesson. One name that would sound a bit odd is UFC two-division champion Amanda Nunes.
Rarely would the fighting world see a man fight a woman. That exception happened a few months ago when a wild match involving a female MMA fighter went up against a superbly overweight man who works as a video blogger.
But obviously, the Paul vs. Nunes clash, if ever it would be made, is different.
One boxer who feels it is not right is Devin Haney. The WBC lightweight champion feels that Paul should face a man and not a woman, TMZ reported.
"I don't think he should fight a girl," Haney tells us. "I think he's still a man. He gotta fight a man."
This is not to take anyway from Nunes. There is no doubt that she is dangerous inside the ring, but rules are different in boxing.
The idea of Nunes facing Paul cropped up after UFC president Dana White suggested that the YouTuber may get a chance to face “The Lioness” rather than Conor McGregor.
Nunes may have the advantage as far as experience in fight sports. But in the eyes of Haney, it is just not fair.
"No, it's not fair. Girls should fight girls. Guys should fight guys," Haney stated.
Aside from that, Haney is impressed with where Paul is at right now. He praised the YouTuber’s work ethic and for taking boxing seriously.
"That's my boy, so I like that he's doing good... I've been in the gym with him. He's showing that he's dedicated to the sport," Haney said.
Paul has not exactly been at peace with the mixed martial arts world. He recently invaded an interview of Dillon Danis and threw some water balloons his way.
It appeared staged but apparently geared to hype up something. That could be Danis or his teammate Conor McGregor.
But to everyone’s surprise, Askren turned out to be the guy that Paul will face next.
Askren will be coming out of retirement to face Paul in March 2021. Despite his success inside the cage, most are now wary of how the 36-year-old would fare in a boxing match against the rookie boxer.
