  • Scarborough on Thursday called for the arrest of Trump and others in a profanity-laced rant that went viral
  • President Trump has been criticized for inciting violence and was temporarily banned from Twitter
  • Scarborough received support on social media for his comments

MSBNC host Joe Scarborough drew praise Thursday for an unfiltered commentary about the mob that raided Capitol. Using the “F” word on live television, Scarborough called for the arrest of the president and several of his allies.

In heated commentary, Scarborough accused police of opening the “f---ing doors” to supporters of President Donald Trump who breached the Capitol building en masse Wednesday.

“If these insurrectionists were Black, they would have been shot in the face,” Scarborough said. “And, my God, if these insurrectionists were Muslim they would have been sniped from the top of buildings.”

Capitol Police faced widespread criticism for the perceived lack of preparation for the storming of the federal building. There have been four reported deaths, including one woman shot by police inside the Capitol building. More than 50 people were arrested, largely on curfew violations.

On social media, Scarborough was widely praised for reflecting the frustration of the general public over a tense political situation that turned violent following a Trump rally on the day that Congress finalized President-elect Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 election.

“Never thought I'd say this, but we are all Joe Scarborough this morning,” Robert Maguire, a research director at the Citizens for Ethics, tweeted early Thursday.

Few people were openly critical of Scarborough’s frustrated rant, which later focused on suggestions that Trump and members of his inner circle incited the violence.

Earlier in the day, Trump had told a large group of supporters on The Ellipse, the park south of the White House, to openly give Republicans the “boldness that they need to take back our country.”

Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani said during the same rally it was time for “trial by combat.” Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., made equally incendiary remarks on Wednesday.

“That’s insurrection against the United States of America and if Donald Trump Jr., Rudy Giuliani and Donald Trump are not arrested today for insurrection and taken to jail and booked — and if the Capitol Hill Police do not go through every video and look at the face of every person that invaded our Capitol and if they are not arrested and brought to justice today — then we are no longer a nation of laws and we only tell people they can do this again,” Scarborough said.

Reactions to that call were equally supportive.

Trump issued a taped video statement as the unrest unfolded on Capitol Hill, simultaneously urging his supporters to go home and offering them support.

Both Twitter and Facebook temporarily suspended the president’s accounts.

While Trump leaves office on Jan. 20, a growing number of lawmakers on Thursday called on Congress to invoke the 25th Amendment, which would remove Trump from office because of his “inability to discharge the powers and duties.”
