  • The Weeknd said his 2018 album "My Dear Melancholy" was cathartic
  • Fans thought that many songs in the album were about his exes Selena Gomez, Bella Hadid
  • Gomez's fans assumed that her song "Souvenir" was about The Weeknd

The Weeknd talked about his 2018 album "My Dear Melancholy," which many considered a breakup album because it followed his high-profile romances with Selena Gomez and Bella Hadid.

The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, sat down for an interview with Esquire and dished about his breakup songs from two years ago. There were speculations that the album was a reference to his relationships with the 23-year-old model and the "Boyfriend" singer. The Weeknd didn't go into detail but considered making the album cathartic.

"The reason why it was so short is like, I think I just had nothing else to say on this . . . whatever . . . . It was just like this cathartic piece of art. And yeah, it was short, because that’s all I had to say on this situation," he said.

When asked if it made him feel better, he gave a positive response.

"Yeah, of course. I mean, that would have sucked if I didn’t," he said.

When asked why he scrapped the "upbeat" album for the "My Dear Melancholy," The Weeknd said it wasn't much of a big deal for him because it wasn't the first time he scrapped records.

When The Weeknd released his album two years ago, several blog posts were published dedicated to the lyrics of his songs, assuming references to both Hadid and Gomez, Esquire noted.

"I hope you know this [explicit] is still an option. . . . You were an equestrian, so ride it like a champion," one line in The Weeknd's "Wasted Time" read, which many assumed was for Hadid.

"I almost cut a piece of myself for your life," a line from "Call Out My Name" read, which fans thought was for Gomez.

The Weeknd and Gomez started dating in January 2017 shortly after his split from Hadid. They parted ways in November that year with The Weeknd rekindling his romance with Hadid and Gomez briefly being linked to her ex Justin Bieber.

Meanwhile, when Gomez released her song "Souvenir" in April, many also believed that it was a reference to her ex-boyfriend, The Weeknd. The "Wolves" songstress' fans noticed that the song mentioned several places where they were spotted together when they were still dating.

“It was obvious that Selena and Abel fell for each other hard and had a deep connection they were always hugging and kissing and showing each other affection and she seems to mention it a lot in this song,” one commented on the video.
