Werner Had A Hand In Havertz Signing, Lampard Says

Frank Lampard had a massive spending spree for Chelsea FC and the Blues are looking good. But with a lot of new faces, the English coach knows that there will be struggles in the early goings. Havertz has yet to settle in, but Lampard knows that he will eventually blend with the squad.

Though the coming of Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen is well-documented, Lampard revealed that he got a lot of help from one of his new acquisitions. He had discussions with Timo Werner, and the talk helped a lot in signing the 21-year-old German, Goal reported.

Werner, one of the Blues' first big signings for roughly $61 million, did more than bring his talent to Stamford Bridge. His feedback was also used to pull major deals, one of which was taking in Havertz. Those conversations gave Lampard a better overview of the history of the 21-year-old midfielder.

"I did as much watching of him as a player as I could, and by that time Timo had arrived at the club, and Timo and Kai are pretty close so I could obviously ask Timo a lot about him, them playing in the national team together. So we had very good background on him," Lampard said.

But the one thing that impressed Lampard the most was Havertz’s humility. It is a trait that Lampard is looking for and loves in players, especially the ones who are looking to improve themselves.

Despite the good credentials of Havertz, Lampard knows that there is a lot to expect. The German only had about four to five days of training so the actual grind that Havertz needs to undergo has yet to come.

"Fitness levels for Kai were difficult," Lampard said. "They are only going to get better and get better quickly. I've seen lots of his talent and have no doubt the impact he will have as a Chelsea player."

Regardless, there is no denying that Werner and Havertz can eventually get there. Both are expected to start for Lampard when the Blues face Liverpool.

As far as Liverpool is concerned, one player who won’t be around yet is Thiago Alcantara. The Reds signed the Spanish football player for $35 million but won’t be available against the Blues, BBC reported. The 29-year-old was a big thorn for Chelsea when they fell to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

"Thiago's an incredible player, we saw first-hand his quality on the pitch, personality on the pitch and off the pitch," Lampard said.
