Rachel Zegler captured the hearts of many moviegoers by playing Maria Vasquez in the revival of “West Side Story,” and now many are empathizing with her over her Oscars snub.
The 20-year-old actress, who did not get nominated for any Academy Awards, revealed on Instagram that she won’t be attending the upcoming awards ceremony because she did not get an invite.
When one fan asked her on the photo-sharing platform about the dress she was wearing to the ceremony, Zegler spilled the beans on her nonattendance to the big event.
“I’m not invited, so sweatpants and my boyfriend’s flannel,” she wrote in response to the inquiry raised on her recent post featuring a series of personal images.
After fans found out that she did not receive an invitation, many expressed their anger and disappointment on social media. A number called out the award-giving body over her exclusion.
Zegler took notice of the outrage from fans who were dismayed by the snub on Twitter. She told them that she’s still waiting for a “last-minute miracle” that would allow her to witness the show in person.
“IDK y’all I have tried it all but it doesn’t seem to be happening. I will root for ‘West Side Story’ from my couch and be proud of the work we so tirelessly did 3 years ago,” the actress wrote.
She continued, “I hope some last-minute miracle occurs and I can celebrate our film in person but hey, that’s how it goes sometimes, I guess. [T]hanks for all the shock and outrage — I’m disappointed, too. [B]ut that’s OK. So proud of our movie.”
Though Zegler did not get nominated, Steven Spielberg’s take on the classic musical is up for seven awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose, as per The Hollywood Reporter.
The 94th Academy Awards will happen on March 27 at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood and Highland in Los Angeles. Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes will host the event.
While Zegler missed out on the chance to snag the Oscar for Best Actress, she already received a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Maria.
Zegler will next be seen in the upcoming DC superhero flick “Shazam! Fury of the Gods.” The film will hit cinemas in December.
She is also playing the title role in the upcoming remake of Disney’s “Snow White,” according to Deadline.
