KEY POINTS

  • Lakers fans are losing confidence in Russell Westbrook's fit with the team
  • Westbrook needs to take cue from Carmelo Anthony’s adjustment with the Lakers
  • Westbrook needs to step up and fill in the void left by an injured LeBron James

Russell Westbrook of the Los Angeles Lakers continued to draw criticism for struggling to fit in with the team.

The 2017 NBA Most Valuable Player has shown signs of brilliance in several games, and the only way to be consistent is by adjusting to his new role.

One player who Westbrook may want to take a look at is Carmelo Anthony.

Like Westbrook, Anthony was someone scrutinized on how he could co-exist with LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Both All-Star players are known to be ball dominant. However, the 10-time All-Star was able to adjust to his new role, something pointed out by American player Akeem Scott when he appeared on the Sports For All PH podcast hosted by Filipino journalists Vincent Juico and Brian Yalung.

“For Russ [Westbrook], his adjustment to his game is that he has to learn to stay still and wait for the ball. Carmelo [Anthony] has already caught into it. He sits in the corner and waits for his three-point shot,” said the 38-year-old guard who is best known for suiting up for the Saigon Heat in the ASEAN Basketball League.

Scott also pointed out that Westbrook is going through a process. The good news is that the nine-time All-Star has gotten better with each game.

Furthermore, he stressed that with James sitting out games for an estimated four to eight weeks, it is the best time for the 32-year-old guard to step up and unleash his old self.

“Westbrook, he is adjusting to it now. The good thing is that LeBron is sitting out some games, so Westbrook can he still be himself. But he has gotten better every game… These [Lakers] guys are going to be scary in the playoffs,” Scott explained.

For now, fans will have to continue to be patient as Los Angeles struggles.

They are split on whether or not Westbrook is a fit for the purple-and-gold system, but what matters most is the playoffs and their quest to win the franchise’s 18th NBA title.
