Kim Kardashian has opened up about experiencing agoraphobia after being robbed at gunpoint in France in 2016.
In a newly released bonus clip from "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," shared about a month after the show's series finale, Kardashian revealed during a conversation with sister Khloé that her fear resurfaced during the lockdown.
“We had just gone to Paris. We had just started traveling, and then quarantine happened. Now I’m, like, such a freak all over again and never want to, like, leave [home],” she was quoted by Page Six as saying.
The reality star recalled feeling that way immediately after the robbery.
“I feel like I had agoraphobia, definitely, after my robbery in Paris,” Kardashian shared. “Like, definitely would stay in, hated to go out, I didn’t want anyone to know where I was or be seen. I just had such anxiety.”
Though the robbery occurred almost five years ago, Kardashian said that the "high anxiety" she experienced following the ordeal returned during the pandemic, when she and her now-estranged husband Kanye West went out for the first time in public.
“I was so freaked out. People were trying to come up to Kanye and, like, talk to him and, like, come up to me and ask for photos,” Kardashian said.
She continued, “I was just, like, absolutely not. I would stop people, like, ‘Get away. This is my first time out, I’m not comfortable with you coming a step closer.’ … I don’t get even remotely, unless [fans] have a selfie stick and want to do it six feet away. That was, like, high anxiety on another level.”
In October 2016, the KKW Beauty mogul was tied up and put in the bathtub of her hotel room in Paris by five armed robbers who posed as policemen to gain entry. The suspects left with about $10 million worth of jewelry in their pockets, including the $5 million engagement ring West gave Kardashian.
Agoraphobia is the fear of being in places or situations where escape might be difficult or help wouldn't be available if things go wrong. Most people who have agoraphobia fear public places, standing in line or being in large crowds, according to Mayo Clinic.
The fear is usually developed after a person gets one or more panic attacks, causing them to worry about having another attack and avoid places or situations where they might have the same experience.
Treatment for agoraphobia usually involves psychotherapy and medications.
