"The Betty White Challenge" became a trending topic Monday on social media. The hashtag calls for donations to local animal rescue sites in honor of the comedic actor.

White, whose fame saw a resurgence many years after she starred in the 1980's sitcom "The Golden Girls," died Friday at the age of 99.

“On Betty White's 100th birthday, January 17th, everyone should pick a local rescue or animal shelter in your area and donate just $5 in Betty White’s name. Make her 100th birthday the movement she deserves,” the viral graphic reads.

White was an animal lover and had as many as 26 dogs. She would also volunteer at zoos and animal shelters.

The Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA) — the nonprofit partner of the Los Angeles Zoo where she started working in 1966 — released a statement about White's dedication to animals.

"Her work with the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association spans more than five decades, and we are grateful for her enduring friendship, lifelong advocacy for animals, and tireless dedication to supporting our mission," GLAZA President Tom Jacobson said in a statement.

The #BettyWhiteChallege is asking for $5 donations. Most local shelters have an option to donate on their websites or by phone. A donation box is also available at locations.
