Some businesses and stores are expected to be closed Monday in celebration of Presidents Day, a federal holiday commemorating the birthdays and lives of the 45 U.S. commanders in chief.
Presidents Day was first observed in 1971 to commemorate Washington's Birthday, which is Feb. 22. However, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1968 to move Presidents Day to the third Monday of February, and also move Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Columbus Day to Mondays to give workers more three-day holidays.
Here is a list of the business and stores that are closed or open for the holiday.
Banks
Most banks, including Federal Reserve Banks, will be closed for Presidents Day. The list includes the Bank of America, Capital One Bank, Chase, Citibank, PNC Bank, Santander Bank and Wells Fargo. However, TD Bank is scheduled to stay open for the holiday. ATMs will also be available.
The U.S. Post Office will be closed Monday, which means there will be no residential or business mails delivered for the day. Priority Mail Express will still be delivered. Other mailing services such as FedEx Ground, FedEx Home Delivery and UPS will still operate on President’s Day.
Stock Market
The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and bond markets will be closed.
Government offices and courts
Federal and state courts will not be operating Monday. Other nonessential government agencies and city, county and state offices will also remain closed.
Restaurants
Most restaurants are expected to be open Monday. However, it is advised to check with local stores to find out if they have adjusted their hours for the holiday.
Schools
Most schools are closed on Presidents Day, with some even closing on the Friday before the holiday. However, it is up to the public district or private school to decide. Parents are advised to check with their local school to see if classes will resume despite the holiday.
Grocery Stores
Shoppers should check with their local supermarket for information, including holiday store hours. However, many major supermarkets will be open at regular hours on Monday, according to NJ.com. These include:
