The United States had more success than any country in the last Olympics, and the 2016 Rio Games are expected to produce similar results. A day before the opening ceremony, the U.S. is heavily favored to lead the gold medal count.

The U.S. has the best odds to win the most gold medals, by far, as a 2/13 betting favorite. Four years ago, the U.S. finished first with 46 gold medals and 103 medals in total. In Rio, the U.S. has been given 5/7 odds to win more than 42.5 gold medals.

China has been given the best chance to unseat the U.S. as the most dominant Olympic country with 4/1 odds. It wasn’t too long ago when China did win more gold medals than the U.S., and they did so handily when they were the host nation. China led the 2008 Beijing Olympics with 51 gold medals, holding a 15-medal advantage over the U.S.

Even when China beat the U.S. in first-place finishes eight years ago, the U.S. still led the way with 110 total medals. Four years ago, the U.S. had 103 overall medals, while China came in second with 88. In Rio, the U.S. has 1/2 odds to surpass 103 combined gold, silver and bronze medals.

The U.S. is such a heavy favorite in certain sports that it would be a monumental upset for the nation not to win gold. The men’s basketball team is a 1/16 favorite to win the gold medal, and Team USA has failed to finish in first just once since NBA players began playing at the Olympics in 1992 as part of the Dream Team. The women’s basketball team is expected to be nearly as dominant with 1/14 odds.

Michael Phelps is expected to bring home multiple gold medals, as he’s done in each of the last three Games. The most decorated Olympian in history is favored to win the 100-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley, though he is a slight underdog in the 200-meter butterfly.

While China could make things interesting for the U.S. when it comes to gold medals, no other country is expected to come close. Great Britain has the third best odds at 50/1, while three other nations—Australia, Germany and Russia—all have 66/1 odds. In 2012, Great Britain finished in third place as the host nation, racking up 29 gold medals.

The 2016 host nation, Brazil, only totaled three gold medals in 2012.
