HGTV’s “Flip or Flop” stars Christina and Tarek La Moussa issued a statement after they announced their separation Monday. The couple has been married since May 2009.
Their split came months after they had an explosive fight at their California home. Police were called and multiple firearms were removed from the area.
“Like many couples, we have had challenges in our marriage,” the El Moussas said in a joint statement to Us Weekly. “We had an unfortunate misunderstanding about six months ago and the police were called to our house in an abundance of caution. There was no violence and no charges were filed. We chose to get counseling to sort out our relationship. Together, we have decided to separate while we reevaluate the future of our marriage. During this process, we are committed to our kids and being the best parents we can be.”
Christina and Tarek garnered fame on “Flip or Flop.” They are real estate agents who buy foreclosures, short sales and bank-owned homes, remodel them, and then sell them for a profit. The series rates 6.4/10 on the Internet Movie Database. Because of the way they’re portrayed on the show. They earned the reputation as a nearly perfect couple.
In real life, they want to continue the show. “We will continue to work through this process civilly and cooperatively, and plan to continue our professional life together,” they said in their statement.
Police were called to their home May 23 in response to a “possibly suicidal male with a gun,” TMZ reported Monday. Tarek ran “out of his back door, jump over his back fence and walk northbound into the hiking trails of the Chino Hills State Park,” an insider said. Christina followed. She was “crying and shaking.” Eleven deputies showed up to the home, along with a helicopter.
Tarek wasn’t suicidal; he was just “trying to blow of some steam.” He took a gun with him to defend himself against any wild animals in the area. There are mountain lions and rattlesnakes nearby, TMZ added. Authorities removed five guns, including an AR-15, from the Orange County home.
They have two children: 1-year-old son, Brayden, a 6-year-old daughter, Taylor.
