KEY POINTS

  • Manchester United recorded their maiden win of the 2022-23 Premier League
  • Man Utd defeated Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford on Monday
  • Rashford and Sancho scored for the hosts

Marcus Rashford said Manchester United defended well in their 2-1 win over Liverpool FC in the Premier League on Monday.

Jadon Sancho opened the scoring for Manchester United in the 16th minute before Rashford doubled their lead at Old Trafford. While Mohamed Salah pulled one back for Liverpool, the Reds failed to score an equalizer.

Manchester United took three games to finally open their goals sheet. In their opening fixture that ended in a 2-1 loss, the goal on the Red Devils' account was an own goal by Brighton. After three games into the 2022-23 Premier League, the Red Devils have two losses and a win.

"We started the game at a higher tempo. We tired towards the end but we kept going and we just stuck at it. They got a goal back and we didn't fold, we kept defending well. It was an enjoyable game to play in," Rashford told Sky Sports after the game at Old Trafford.

At the half-time break, Erik ten Hag made a tactical change as he brought in Anthony Martial to replace Anthony Elanga, moving Rashford to the wide left.

Speaking about the same, Rashford added, "I think with the versatility we have in the team we can do many different things, especially in attack. The game was going well in the first half, we [were] attacking some good spaces but we weren't quite getting the end product that I felt we deserved in the first half. For us to be able to switch and chop and change positions like that is always a positive."

Last season, Rashford and Sancho scored just five goals each. The contribution from these two will be crucial for Ten Hag, who took over Manchester United's charge this season.

Sancho kept his cool and produced a composed finish as he netted the first goal against Liverpool on Monday.

"Once I chopped inside, I knew I just had to keep my cool. I've seen the gap and I've trusted myself, and I've finished it. You just have to compose yourself and be calm," Sancho told Sky Sports after the game.

The 22-year-old Englishman termed the 2-1 victory over Liverpool a "big win" as they had bounced back following their humiliating 4-0 defeat to Brentford last week.

"We knew that today we had to show desire and belief. I'm so glad we got the three points today," added Sancho.

Manchester United's next game in the Premier League is on Saturday against Southampton at St. Mary's.
