What Is Michael Nance’s Cause Of Death? Emily Maynard Responds To ‘Bachelorette’ Contestant Dying
Former “Bachelorette” Emily Maynard issued a statement after one of her potential suitors died Monday. Michael Nance, who appeared on Season 8 of the ABC reality TV show in 2012, was discovered “unresponsive” in Texas, the Austin Police Department told Radar Online the following day.
The musician was 31 years old. A cause of death was not immediately known, but he admitted to suffering from addiction in a deleted scene from the unscripted series. “I was addicted to prescription drugs,” he said in 2012. “It’s a vicious cycle…I’m almost two years sober now.”

A medical examiner is slated to determine the cause of death, a spokesperson for the Austin Police Department Homicide Unit in Texas told E! Online.
Maynard, who married Tyler Johnson in 2014, was saddened by the news. She took to Twitter Tuesday to share her condolences. “So sad waking up to the news about Michael Nance,” she tweeted to her 404,000 followers. “Such a kind heart with so much talent. Sending prayers and love to his family and friends.”
Nance’s death is “not suspicious” at the moment. “Officers were dispatched to a location…at 2:10 am in reference to an unresponsive male,” a spokeswoman told Radar Online. “Upon arriving they located the unresponsive male who was later identified as Michael Nance.” The rep added: “The male was pronounced deceased at 2:54 am.”
His sister, Misty, confirmed the news on Facebook Tuesday. “My precious mother and Michael,” she captioned a picture of her brother next to her mother. “We are all terribly heartbroken, but as a parent this is your worst nightmare. Our lives will never be the same.”
Chris Bukwoski, who appeared on “The Bachelor,” took to Twitter to share his condolences. “Extremely difficult learning the news of Michael Nance's passing,” he wrote. “He was a gentle man with a huge heart. He'll be missed but not forgotten.”
Fellow cast member Tony Pieper remembered the former reality star warmly.
“My fondest memories of Michael were when he would sing and play guitar in the ‘Bachelor’ house,” Pieper told E! Online Tuesday. “You could tell that was his happy and joyous place. He had such a big heart and was such a genuine guy. We lost a good one in Michael. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. RIP, buddy.”
Kalon McMahon, who also appeared on the same season, added to E! Online, “He was one of the nicest and most genuine guys in the house. We kept in touch after the show and I'm just really sad. His music was amazing. He was amazing. He was a gentle giant.”
