“Empire” Season 6 will be the final season of the musical series that follows the ambitious Lyon family. Fans who have followed the show, since its premiere in 2015, still have several unanswered questions about their favorite characters and are anxious for the return of the series.

When “Empire” Season 6 premieres in the fall, viewers won’t see the return of Jussie Smollett’s character, Jamal Lyon. When fans last saw Jamal, he was marrying his boyfriend, Kai (Toby Onwumere).

Since then, the actor has been fired from the show. In January, Smollet claimed two men wearing “MAGA” hats beat him up, and tied a noose around his neck.

After further investigation, police discovered Smollett fabricated the attack for media attention and a pay raise from fox. Although the network extended Smollett’s contract, and the chargers were dropped, the actor was not asked to return for the final season.

During the Television Critics Assoc. summer press tour in August, Charlie Collier, CEO Fox Entertainment, explained why the actor wouldn’t be returning to wrap up his character’s story.

“As much as anything in cases like this, and they’re all so unique, you try to gather all the information,” he said.

“You try to make a good decision at the time. There’s no plans for Jussie to return to Empire.”

Despite Smollett’s contract extension, Collier revealed the network chose to remove the actor from the final season of the series. “Just time and information and conversations with all the right people,” he said.

“A lot of television depends on when the writers’ room is back and all that. We worked with 20th very closely to just make sure we gathered every piece of information we could, did the right thing, and then put the show back together.”

“Empire” Season 6 premieres Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 9 p.m. EDT on Fox.
