When Will ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Come Out? Sequel Release Date Delayed Again
“Wonder Woman 1984” did not hit theaters on it’s first release date in December, its second release date in November and now it will not premiere in theaters on June 5. The Patty Jenkins-directed sequel has been held up yet again.
Like most movies coming this spring, “Wonder Woman 1984” has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The health crisis has closed theaters across the globe as people are encouraged, or in some cases ordered, to stay home to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
“Wonder Woman 1984” will now release in theaters on Aug. 14.
“Wonder Woman 1984” was first delayed from its December date to keep it from conflicting with the last “Star Wars” film, which are always a box office behemoths. Then, the November release date was shifted to June because Warner Bros. believed the Gal Gadot film would perform better at the summer box office. The August release date puts the movie, which features the return of Chris Pine's Steve Trevor, at the tail end of the season.
No one knows if the crisis will be over in June, but there is a possibility that the movie isn’t finished yet. Often, post-production (which includes editing, music and special effects) isn’t finished until weeks before a film starts playing in cinemas. It’s likely that finishing touches need to be made that can’t be done until people can safely work in their offices again. Warner Bros. has not confirmed where the film is in the post-production process.
Another Warner Bros. project, “In The Heights,” has also been delayed indefinitely. Lin Manuel-Miranda, who wrote the music for the Broadway musical adaptation, said that they weren’t done with post-production earlier this week. He said that he wants to see the film in theaters when the time was right.
Variety reports that the WB also pulled “Scoob,” previously due out May 14, and “Malignant,” previously in the new “Wonder Woman” slot on Aug. 14. No new release dates have been set.
DC isn’t the only one moving their big superhero movie. Disney also pulled Marvel Studios’ “Black Widow,” which was supposed to be out May 1. A new release date has yet to be announced.
