Where Does The President Sleep? Donald Trump And Melania Have Separate Beds, Like Previous First Couples
The internet, long obsessed with Donald and Melania Trump's marriage, got a new relationship detail to seize upon Wednesday: The couple doesn't usually sleep in the same bed, according to an exclusive Us Weekly report.
"They never spend the night together — ever," an anonymous source close to the Trump family told the magazine.
Although Donald Trump moved into the White House on Jan. 20, Melania Trump has decided to stay in New York City while her young son, Barron, finishes the academic year. But even when they're together, they may not be physically close. The details of their sleeping arrangement were unclear, with one source indicating the husband and wife slept in different rooms and another claiming they just used separate beds in the same room.

The Us Weekly story centered around how the first lady was feeling "miserable" in her new role next to the president — an allegation her representatives denied, saying, "It’s unfortunate that you are going to feature unnamed 'sources' that have provided fictional accounts." But they wouldn't be the first first couple to have their sleeping habits scrutinized.
Sixteenth President Abraham Lincoln and his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, slept separately, according to the White House Museum. However, that tradition changed with Mamie Eisenhower, the first lady to 34th President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
"Departing from the strictures of history, she also eliminated the separate bedrooms for the president and first lady in the upstairs living quarters," Robert P. Watson wrote in "The Presidents' Wives: Reassessing The Office Of First Lady."

Susan Ford Bales, the daughter of 38th President Gerald Ford, told Smithsonian Magazine her parents slept together in the capital because they always had before moving into the White House. But, truly, there's no standard: Recently, 42nd President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary Clinton, reportedly snoozed in different rooms.
