White House COVID-19 Superspreader Event: Trump's Lawyer Attends WH Party Days Before Testing Positive
KEY POINTS
- Ellis attended the party as Peter Navarro's guest
- Staffers who were at the event brought their families
- It is unclear when Ellis was diagnosed with COVID-19
Jenna Ellis, one of President Donald Trump’s campaign lawyers, has told associates she tested positive for coronavirus, days after she attended a senior staff Christmas party at the White House.
Ellis showed up at the party on Friday as a guest of Peter Navarro, Trump’s trade adviser, without a face mask, sources who attended the event told Axios. Her attendance has angered staffers who were furious with her for fanning conspiracy theories about Trump's loss in the 2020 election as part of an effort to overturn Joe Biden's victory.
“She had the nerve to show up at the senior staff Christmas party knowing everyone was furious with her for constantly stirring Trump up with nonsense," a senior administration official said.
Her COVID-19 diagnosis has caused worry among staffers who attended the event. Many also voiced concern about the possibility of another White House coronavirus superspreader event.
"People brought their families," a senior White House official said.
A White House official also revealed that Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner were present at the Friday holiday event that Ellis attended, CNN reported.
It is unclear when Ellis tested positive or whether she showed any symptoms. It is also unclear whether the White House has begun contact tracing to determine whether she exposed anyone to the virus.
In recent weeks, Ellis appeared in multiple public hearings where she amplified allegations of widespread election fraud. She has also attended news conferences where few wore masks or followed social distancing protocols, Business Insider reported.
Last week, Ellis was photographed sitting next to Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani at a hearing in Michigan, where they urged lawmakers not to certify incoming president Joe Biden’s victory.
During the five-hour legislative hearing in Michigan, Ellis and Giuliani did not wear face masks. Giuliani was hospitalized Sunday after testing positive for coronavirus.
Ellis and Giuliani had previously refused to self-quarantine despite coming into close contact with campaign adviser Boris Epshteyn, who revealed his COVID-19 diagnosis in late November. Ellis and Giuliani also attended a crowded ballroom event in Pennsylvania together with a group of Republican lawmakers the day Epshteyn tested positive
More than 40 members of the Trump administration have been diagnosed with coronavirus since September, including the president and first lady Melania Trump, who announced their diagnoses in early October, The New York Times reported.
