The White House administration said today that it will be joining three social networking sites in a bid to expand how the administration communicates with the public.

The official White House Blog calls it WhiteHouse 2.0. Its Facebook page already has more than 64,000 fans, and the number appears to rise by a thousand every few minutes.

The White House’s MySpace page, which is similar to its official White House site, has over 8,500 friends and counting. Its Twitter site has more than 15,400 followers.

In the President’s last Weekly Address, he called on government to recognize that we cannot meet the challenges of today with old habits and stale thinking,” the administration said in blog titled WhiteHouse 2.0.

He added that we need to reform our government so that it is more efficient, more transparent, and more creative, and pledged to reach beyond the halls of government to engage the public.

The White House has invited the social networking users to provide it with feedback.

Technology has profoundly impacted how -- and where -- we all consume information and communicate with one another, the blog added.

WhiteHouse.gov is an important part of the administration's effort to use the Internet to reach the public quickly and effectively -- but it isn't the only place, it said, pointing to the new online destinations.
