Amor Ftouhy was in custody after allegedly stabbing a police officer at Bishop International Airport in Flint, Michigan Wednesday, NBC News reporter Tom Winter tweeted. The officer, identified as Jeff Neville, was taken to Hurley Medical Center with stab wounds to his back and neck and remained in critical condition.

A law enforcement official said the attack appeared to have deliberately targeted police, according to CNN. The suspect reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” before stabbing the officer and federal investigators said they were looking into the situation as a possible act of terrorism, according to NBC.

The FBI said in a statement that it was too soon to determine whether the incident was terrorism.

"We are aware of reports that the attacker made statements immediately prior to or while attacking the officer, but it is too early to determine the nature of these alleged statements or whether or not this was an act of terrorism," the statement said. "Based on the information that we have at this time, we believe this to be an isolated incident. We currently have no specific, credible information that there is a threat to the Flint community."

One witness said he walked into the airport and saw the aftermath of the incident.

“The cop was on his hands and knees bleeding from his neck,” Ken Brown told the Flint Journal. “I said they need to get him a towel.”

Brown said he saw a man being detained by police and saw a knife on the ground. Investigators said the man who attacked the officer was of “substantial size,” according to local WNEM-TV. Another witness said the suspect had a “blank” look on his face.

Passengers at the airport were evacuated and all were safe after the incident. Officials said the airport would remain closed until further notice.

“All passengers are safe and are being evacuated at this time,” the airport said in a statement on Facebook. “Please check with your airline for potential cancellations or delays.”

The FBI said it would be leading the response to the stabbing.

“As we wait to learn more about the incident at Bishop Airport, please keep the attacked officer in your thoughts and prayers,” Gov. Rick Snyder tweeted Wednesday.

Neville was identified as a retired lieutenant from the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office who was employed with Bishop Airport Public Safety.

“Right now we are still awaiting more information about the situation at Bishop Airport this morning,” Mayor Karen Weaver said in a statement. “My thoughts and prayers are with all of our law enforcement officers who work to service and protect us each and every day. I want the public to know that several agencies are involved and working to ensure the situation is under control. However, at this time we are taking extra precautions just to be safe.”

The police chief stationed extra officers in the area surrounding Flint City Hall for the time being, according to WNEM.
