Who Killed Sister Cathy? What Happened To Baltimore Nun Explored In Netflix Series
A young nun was slain more than 50 years ago, yet her killer remains unnamed. The new Netflix series, “The Keepers,” aims to explore the 1969 death of Sister Catherine “Cathy” Cesnik in a true crime series that is seemingly a mix of “Making a Murderer” and “Spotlight.”
“Baltimore’s always been a quintessentially Catholic city. The priests were the authority. Whatever they told you to do, you did,” the trailer, which dropped on YouTube Wednesday, starts. “The city has its level of corruption.”
Sister Cathy was a beloved English teacher at Keough High School in Baltimore who “exemplified this spirit of compassion and kindness,” one of the participants in the series says. “I have never had a teacher like that before,” another adds.

So when Sister Cathy was killed at the age of 26 years old, the community was shocked. “She was murdered our senior year and it’s always haunted many people in the community,” a different person says. “Our mission, we were driven, to find out who hurt Sister Cathy.”
Fifty years after the crime, people from the community are ready to talk. It’s a story of corruption, deceit and scandal. “There’s an on the record public story of what happened to Sister Cathy and then there’s the world beneath,” a different person adds in the trailer. “The police department and the state could provide protection for the priests.”
Decades later, people came forward about the alleged sexual abuse that occurred at the Catholic high school. “I can testify that over 100 victims have been abused,” one whistleblower says. “Time is getting short for us to be able to figure out what happened to Sister Cathy.”
Finally, the trailer ends with a chilling anecdote: “This goes bigger and deeper than we can imagine. The story is not the nun’s killing. The story is the cover up of the nun’s story.”
Don’t miss “The Keepers,” a seven-episode series, when it’s ready to stream May 19 on Netflix.
