Who Is Lauren Morelli? Samira Wiley Shares Engagement Photo On Instagram
While “Orange is the New Black” fans are familiar with Samira Wiley, the actress who played Litchfield inmate Poussey Washington, not everyone knows her girlfriend, Lauren Morelli. The “OITNB” writer proposed to Wiley Tuesday.
Wiley and Morelli took to Instagram to share the news. Wiley simply wrote, “Yes,” and showed off her diamond and engagement ring to her 2.4 million followers. The post quickly attracted 130,000 likes.
Morelli shared the same picture, where Wiley is smiling wide. She only used an emoji of a heart as a caption.
Days earlier, Morelli “whisked” Wiley away on a surprise vacation. “Love it when she whisks me away for a weekend,” the former “OITNB” actress wrote Sunday. She didn’t give away the location of their destination.
The duo fell in love on the set of the famous Netflix series.
Before her relationship with Wiley, Morelli was married to television writer Steve Basilone. But after she started work on “OITNB,” the series helped her understand she was gay. More than that, she was in love with Wiley.
“I was nervous about the first love scene I’d written for Alex and Piper. I’d loved writing it, loved watching a tenderness emerge in their relationship where passion always seemed to be the ruling principle, but by that time, I was so deep in my own self-doubt that I constantly felt like a fraud,” she wrote a coming out essay for Identities.Mic in May 2014. “I was sure it was bleeding into my writing. How could it not? I was married to a man, but I wasn’t straight.”
Morelli and Basilone “very amicably” divorced September 2014. The couple filed a joint petition, TMZ wrote at the time .She responded to criticism about her split by writing, “It's a noisy place, this world.”
After her character was killed off on “OITNB,” Wiley hasn’t stopped working. She appeared in the summer thriller, “Nerve” and is working on TV series “The Handmaid’s Tale,” according to the Internet Movie Database.
