Who Is Lauren Silberman? VIDEO Female Kicker Tries Out At NFL Regional Combine, Hopes To Inspire Change
A gender barrier could be broken down Sunday by Lauren Silberman.
The 28-year-old will be the first female kicker to ever try out at an NFL regional scouting combine Sunday, according to the Associated Press.
Silberman will work out at the New York Jets practice facility in Florham Park, N.J., in the hopes her efforts will inspire people around the world. She was a member of the University of Wisconsin Club Soccer team and is an MIT graduate.
Still, Silberman knows her chances might be slim.
"I am working hard to prepare but I am also realistic about my chances," Silberman told the AP. "I hope my willingness to put myself out there inspires others to seize opportunities and challenges. The support from around the world has been so heartening."
Her leg strength will be the biggest test, even though Silberman said she wants to convert a 60-yard field goal by the end of the day.
The main combine is by invitation only, and was held last week. Should Silberman impress scouts, she will be among those moving on to a “super-regional” held in Dallas in April.
In an interview with The Guardian, Silberman said she hopes to be like St. Louis Rams sensation Greg Zuerlein, who also tried out at the regional combine, and became one of the best in the NFL last season, earning the nickname "Legatron."
The video below shows her interview on NFL AM and some kicking highlights.
