Who Is Meghan Markle’s Ex-Husband? Meet Trevor Engelson
Meghan Markle will be a royal bride soon, but this isn’t her first time walking down the aisle. The actress was married to Trevor Engelson before meeting Prince Harry.
Markle and Engelson spent almost a decade together. They got together in 2005 before getting married six years later. Their wedding was held at the Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on Sept. 10, 2011, Us Weekly reports. Their divorce happened just two years later.
The couple cited “irreconcilable differences” as their reason for breaking up. There are rumors that distance played a factor in the divorce. Markle was working on her TV show “Suits” in Toronto for several months out of the year while Engelson was based in Los Angeles.
It isn’t clear how the two met, but they both work in show business. Engelson, 41, is a producer. The New York native, who was born in the town of Great Neck, works on both movies and TV shows, and he and Markle even worked together on 2010’s “Remember Me.”
Currently, Engelson is an executive producer on FX’s “Snowfall,” about the rise of crack cocaine in Los Angeles, as well as TV Land’s upcoming “Heathers” TV series, based on the 1988 Winona Ryder movie. It’s another upcoming project, however, that seems inspired by his situation with Markle.
Engelson is developing a TV show with Fox about a divorced couple co-parenting their kids and dealing with the newfound attention that comes when one half of the couple joins the royal family, according to Deadline.
The logline for the pilot reads, “Divorce is hard. Sharing custody is harder. Sharing custody with the British royal family when your wife marries a prince, in the unforgiving spotlight of London’s tabloid media, is next level.”
Of course, the University of Southern California alum and Markle never had children together. However, the show’s producer, Dan Farah, once brought up in conversation with Engelson the idea of what his life would look like if he had procreated with Markle. They liked the idea enough to pitch it as a single camera comedy.
“Modern Family” executive producer Danny Duker is writing the script while “Speechless” director Christine Gernon will helm the pilot. No casting announcements have been made yet, and Fox has not announced yet if the series has been picked up as part of their primetime lineup.
Luckily, Engelson and Markle’s divorce doesn’t stand in the way of Prince Harry marrying Markle. While royals were previously forbidden from marrying divorcees in the Church of England, the General Synod Ruling of 2002 reversed that rule. Prince Harry wouldn’t even be the first to marry a divorcee. Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, were both divorced from their first spouses before marrying in 2005.
