Ohio State football will have a new head coach after the 2018 season. The school confirmed Yahoo Sports’ report Tuesday morning that Urban Meyer plans to step down and offensive coordinator Ryan Day will be his replacement.

Day, 39, does have experience as the Buckeyes’ head coach. He was the team’s acting coach for the first three games of this season when Meyer served a suspension for the way he handled allegations of domestic violence against former assistant coach Zach Smith.

Day has only been with the school since last year when he joined Ohio State to be the team’s co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He became the sole offensive coordinator in January. Day previously coached in the NFL, serving as the Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback coach in 2015 and the San Francisco 49ers’ quarterbacks coach in 2016.

Meyer first worked with Day when the Buckeyes’ new head coach was just a graduate assistant at Florida in 2005. Meyer was the Florida head coach from 2005-2010 before resigning for health reasons.

The Buckeyes were dominant in Day’s three games as the acting coach, going undefeated and outscoring their opponents 169-62. Ohio State picked up wins over Oregon State, Rutgers and then-No.15 TCU.

With Day running the offense, quarterback Dwayne Haskins led all college football quarterbacks with 4,580 passing yards. The Buckeyes are second in the nation in total offense and eighth in scoring with 43.5 points per game. Ohio State finished No.6 in the final College Football Playoff rankings after going 12-1 and winning the Big Ten Championship.

Meyer will coach Ohio State in his final game when they face No.9 Washington in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day.
